Not everyone knows that you may be able to reduce the number of prims used on your property simply by linking objects together. Saving a few land impact units allows you to add more objects to your SL property.
In this example we combine two objects. Right click on one of the objects and select edit, the edit window similar to that shown here will appear.
Here we have selected the first object - note it is one prim.
This is the second object, also one prim.
Hold down the “shift” key and left click on the other object to select it also. The last object selected becomes the “root prim” and will be outlined in yellow when in editing mode.
Now we click the link button while both object are selected and it goes from 2 prims to one. The objects must have “modify” permission, the same “owner”, and a no-copy object may not be linked to a no-transfer object.
To Unlink Objects that you have Previously Linked:
- Right click on any one of the linked objects and select edit to open the edit window.
- Click on the button labeled “Unlink”. The prims will be unlinked. The land impacts will probably go up. Warning: if you don’t have enough land units available for all the unlinked prims you may get an error message.
Be warned, there are some gotchas with this, sometimes your land impact could actually go up, so tread carefully. There’s also the issue of scripts, the objects may stop working the way you want them. Such as with beds, chairs, doors or lights.
Before you start experimenting, make sure you have a copy of your items in your inventory.
