So what is a BOM texture?
Well the "old" mesh body's do not have BOM they have a body layer for every layer, the skin, underwear, tattoo's. up to 5 layers, that means you are wearing 5 mesh body's on top of each other. So, with BOM the SL server will bake the different textures together to a single layer and that texture will be applied to the mesh body. that means you can get rid of 4 layers of mesh body, cutting the overall complexity to 1/4, this will reduce the overall lag in places where there are a lot of avatars considerably. The new Bakes on Mesh feature does not influence your mesh clothing in any way, you can still use that as you always have.
The first thing you need to do is make sure you have the most up to date version of your viewer. Most skin creators have made their skins BOM enabled. Now make sure you have a updated versions of your head and body.
My Maitreya Mesh Body update V5 intergraded with a Bakes on Mesh. However I opted for a new mesh head.
Now locate a skin store that has BOM skins. You won't be able to use Bakes on Mesh until you have a BOM skin. Now you will simply wear the BOM body skin. Remember you can’t remove skins, you will need to wear it. If you’re demoing a skin, you’ll just need to replace it by wearing a different skin. Most bodies and heads have a option right on the HUD that says apply BOM. Once you have enabled BOM on both your head and body, you should see yourself as normal, just as you looked before starting the process with the new BOM skin.
I thought it was going to be a lot more complicated than it was. However it’s really simple and the outcome is so worth it. If you don’t understand Bakes on Mesh I encourage you to just give it a try play with the HUD for your head and bodies and ask questions.
The best way to keep up to date with what's happening with BOM is to attend the content creation user group.
